Florida No-Fault Insurance

No-Fault Insurance, PIP

Many people know that Florida is a “no-fault state.” That does not mean that you can go out and cause an accident and not bear any responsibility for it. “No-fault” relates to your own insurance. No-fault insurance is also called PIP or personal injury protection insurance and all of us are required to carry PIP insurance and property damage insurance.

What PIP Does

PIP insurance does essentially two things for you. PIP insurance pays eighty percent of any medical expenses that are incurred by you as a result of an accident whether or not it’s your fault, hence the phrase “no-fault.” PIP insurance also pays 60% of wage loss. So if you’re injured in an car accident, you can’t work and the doctor says you can’t work then you may get 60% of your wage loss as a consequence of the injuries from that accident.

No Bodily Injury Insurance Required

If a person runs into you and causes $1,000 worth of damage to your car, the other driver’s property damage insurance will pay for your damage to the car if the accident was the other driver’s fault. However, the legislature has not required Floridians to have bodily injury coverage, so that if another driver causes that same accident and causes bodily injury there may be no insurance coverage.
